Today on my vlog I talked about coffee… and why no one actually “needs” it (video below if interested).
How many times have you heard someone say that they “need” coffee? Or that they rely on it to get through the day?
Stay with me here for a second…
The reality is that no one needs coffee for anything (if someone offered you $1 billion to quit coffee for a year, I bet you could do it), and more importantly, I think a lot of us have this same mentality regarding starting or growing our own business.
What do I mean by this?
I think we as individuals are quite good at coming up with excuses or inner monologues to get through the day easier, or to “defend” ourselves from doing things we’re a little afraid of. For example:
I need coffee otherwise I can’t get work done
I need a concrete business plan before I start a new one
I need to learn SEO inside-and-out before I start my blog
The reality is that all of those are just excuses – excuses I can definitely relate to and am guilty of – but excuses nonetheless.
So my ask for this post is: try to think of some excuses you’ve been giving yourself, that have maybe delayed you taking action, and ask yourself if you really need what you think you do.
And if you haven’t taken the leap from your 9-5 yet, I dropped a podcast episode where I talk with a now-freelance copywriter. Chris quit his 9-5 job as a software engineer because he was bored, didn’t like working for others and developed a passion for copywriting on the evenings/weekends until he saved up enough cash and was prepared to take the plunge.
For anyone still working 9-5 and making a lot of the excuses above (or if you just don’t think you can do it), I think you’ll get a ton of value hearing Chris’s story, and we talk about some copywriting/SEO/optimization tips as well.
